Ownership

1. Maruti Udyog Limited was founded by the Government of India on 24 February 1981, only to merge with the Japanese automobile company Suzuki in October 1982.
2. The first manufacturing factory of Maruti was established in Gurugram, Haryana, in the same year.

3. It is a 56.21% owned subsidiary of the Japanese car and motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki Motor Corporation.
4. As of July 2018, it had a market share of 53% of the Indian passenger car market.
5. In May 2015, the company produced its fifteen millionth vehicle in India, a Swift Dzire.

Production

6. To build a single car, the workers have to complete 2,545 steps. Before 2014 the steps count was 3,077.
7. Robots and automation processes are also used. In 2 manufacturing plants, a total of 2,400 robots are used, and all are automated. Most paint shops and welding shops use robots and automation processes.
8. Every month 20,000 tonnes of steel used. Half of the steel is imported from South Korea’s Posco and Japan’s Kawasaki Steel. 
9. 240,000 tonnes of steel used in a year which is enough to build 32 Eiffel Towers.
10. To paint 5,000 cars, 70,000 litres of paint every day used. Sixty-five robots are installed to paint the bumpers only at two manufacturing plants at Haryana’s Manesar and Gurgaon.
11. Every day more than 4,000 trucks enter an leave the plant. 3,400 trucks are used to import raw materials from 2500 vendors and 600 plus trucks are used to send the cars to the dealer.

Manesar Violence

12. On 18 July 2012, Maruti's Manesar plant was hit by violence. According to Maruti management, the production workers attacked supervisors and started a fire that killed the company's General Manager of Human Resources Avineesh Dev and injured 100 other managers, including two Japanese expatriates.
13. The shut down of the Manesar plant is leading to a loss of about Rs 75 crore per day.
14. The company dismissed 500 workers accused of causing the violence and re-opened the plant on 21 August.

Maruti 800

23. Harpal Singh was the first owner of the car in India. He received the keys from Smt.Indra Gandhi herself in 1983.
